Is It Just Nerves, or Is It Anxiety? What Back-to-School Season Reveals

Every year, as summer winds down, a familiar feeling starts to creep in for a lot of people — kids and adults alike.

Maybe it’s the racing thoughts the night before the first day of school. The stomachache that shows up every Monday morning. The dread that doesn’t quite go away even after the school year gets started.

Sometimes, that’s just nerves. The kind that pass once things feel familiar again.

But sometimes, it’s anxiety — and the two can look alike from the outside.

What’s the Difference?

Nerves are normal and usually temporary. You feel them before something new or uncertain, and they fade once the situation becomes familiar. Your child gets nervous about meeting their new teacher. By week two, they’re fine.

Anxiety is different. It’s persistent. It doesn’t go away when the “scary thing” is over. It can attach itself to one situation and then spread to others. And for the person experiencing it, it often feels completely out of their control.

Some signs that what you — or your child — is experiencing might be more than nerves:

  • Avoidance that’s getting worse, not better (refusing to go to school, dreading social situations)
  • Physical symptoms with no clear medical cause (stomach issues, headaches, chest tightness)
  • Excessive worry that feels impossible to turn off
  • Sleep problems — trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or nightmares
  • Irritability or emotional outbursts that seem disproportionate to the situation

Why Back-to-School Season Can Trigger Anxiety

The start of a new school year is a period of genuine uncertainty. New environment. New social dynamics. New expectations. For someone with an anxiety-prone nervous system, uncertainty is one of the biggest triggers there is.

Add in the social pressures of adolescence, academic stress, or a difficult experience from the previous year — and it’s not hard to see why this time of year can feel overwhelming.

For adults, it can show up too. Parents dealing with their own anxiety. Adults who were anxious children and find the season brings up old feelings. Or simply the stress of a new routine and shifting schedules.

Anxiety Is Treatable

This is the most important thing to know. Anxiety is one of the most common and most treatable mental health conditions. You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through it, and you don’t have to pass it on to the next generation.

Treatment might look like therapy, medication, or a combination of both. It might mean learning specific coping tools, understanding your triggers, or simply having a space to talk through what’s happening without judgment.

When to Reach Out

If anxiety is affecting your daily life — your sleep, your relationships, your ability to function at school or work — that’s worth paying attention to. You don’t need to be in crisis to get support.

At Hope Restored, we specialize in psychiatric evaluation and medication management for adults experiencing anxiety, among other conditions. We also offer telehealth, which means getting support doesn’t require a trip across town.
